Access to and Release of Confidential Information
Some employees have access to confidential information regarding the college or personal data about faculty, staff, or students. Handling and maintaining the security of such data is one of an employee's most important responsibilities. Special care must be taken not to divulge or inadvertently reveal confidential information to anyone, including over the telephone.
An employee should never release any confidential information without clearance from her or his department head. Questions regarding the release of confidential information should be directed to the department head or the Office of Human Resources. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student records. The purpose of the act is to give students and former students access to their official records at the college, to provide an opportunity to correct inaccurate or misleading statements and to ensure that records are not released to unauthorized persons without the consent of the student. For more information, please visit the Office of the Registrar.
