The photography curriculum explores photography and lens-based practices through a broad range of analog and digital approaches. The sequence of three courses offers an expansive approach to the discipline, beginning with technical, historic, and conceptual fundamentals within Photo I. Photo II offers the opportunity to explore a range of contemporary concerns and interdisciplinary approaches–some students choose to work with large format cameras, others explore digital photography or other technologically mediated approaches such as 3D scanning, VR, or laser cutting. Topics in photography emphasize different thematic and technical areas of study and provides the opportunity for sustained independent work within the framework of the course topic.

The facilities in Hillyer 207 include three black and white darkrooms, an area dedicated to alternative processes, film developing, and a studio. Digital facilities include two digital labs (H218 and H320) with flatbed and film scanners and large format inkjet printing. Digital support and training is provided by The Imaging Center staff and student workers. Students making physical supports, structures, and installations often work with staff in the Woodshop (HL10), the Design Thinking Initiative, or the Center for Design and Fabrication.
