Why Smith?
Smith’s open curriculum allows me to explore my interests and it provides first-generation students like me a variety of resources. When I came to campus for a visit, I met many students who shared stories similar to mine. I listened to how they thrived here because of the support they received. I knew Smith would be the place where I could not only study what I love, but also achieve personal growth.
What has financial aid meant to you?
Financial aid has made the possibility of attending college a reality. I have been able to pursue my interests and be part of a community dedicated to learning and giving back.
What does being a Smithie mean to you?
Being a Smithie means being ambitious, creative and continually striving to obtain knowledge and create change.
What are your career goals?
I'm studying psychology on the premed track and plan to attend medical school. My career goals are to become a pediatric surgeon, to continue working with Latin American communities in education and to help improve the language barrier and health literacy.
Have you had to overcome challenges to get to Smith?
It wasn't until junior year of high school that I learned about college admission requirements, and I was far behind. I struggled to catch up and felt as though I was not ready for college. Luckily, I entered a college preparatory program that helped me. I took college courses on Saturdays and in the summer. I used this opportunity to learn how to advocate for myself so that I could better navigate the education system. Doing so allowed me to find my way to Smith.

What do you hope to accomplish at Smith?
I hope to take full advantage of the open curriculum at Smith to gain a well-rounded education. I also want to create meaningful connections through classes, research and work, and be a resource for others.
Who has had the most impact on you?
My parents. They have supported me through everything, have given the best advice and have proved to me that you can make something out of nothing. I have always said that if they can do it, I can too.

What’s your favorite thing at Smith?
The botanic garden and the Campus Center! Whenever I'm feeling stressed I go for a walk, sit down on a bench near the botanic garden and listen to music. In the Campus Center, I like doing homework, participating in Smith crafts and chatting with friends.
