Why Smith?
I wanted to be surrounded by a community that welcomes yet challenges me.
How did financial aid and Smith's no-loans program affect your college decision?
It was one of the major reasons I committed to Smith. I didn't want my college journey to place an unbearable financial burden on my family.
How did you feel when you got your financial aid letter?
I was excited, overjoyed, and felt incredibly lucky.
What does being a Smithie mean to you?
Being a Smithie means making space for others. Continually pushing the limits of what I think I can do. Trying new things. Taking risks. Being willing to change and adapt as my knowledge of the world expands.
Who or what has had the most impact on your life?
My family has been one of my biggest motivations throughout my life. They’ve always been there for me in both the highs and the lows. Watching my parents has shown me the value of hard work and persistence, the importance of staying grounded in who I am, and the power of kindness toward the people around me.
Favorite thing about Smith?
I love the people. I love that the students are typically willing to support each other. I love that my professors are invested in my growth and success. I love that the staff go out of their way to support students. I love that the college is receptive to feedback.
Which faculty or staff member stands out for you and why?
Many faculty and staff members have impacted me deeply, but two who really stand out are Claire Seely [interim associate director, international students and scholars] and Dean Caitlin [Szymkowicz] at the Lewis Global Studies Center. From helping me navigate last-minute flight changes as a confused first-year, to staying on top of everything related to visas and immigration for international students, to simply making time to chat whenever I stop by their office—they’ve truly been amazing!
Why should donors support Smith?
It is heartwarming to see such a vibrant and high-achieving yet warm community. Smithies are constantly challenging barriers and none of this would be possible without a Smith College in the first place. Your support makes Smith possible.
